Our 2025 event reviews
The Mulligans day at Wollaton Park GC Sept 26th
A trip to Wollaton Park GC in Nottingham saw another Charity event held by the Mulligans golf society and this time raising monies for a well deserving charity EMEESY ( www.emeesykidney.nhs.uk ) serving children in the East of England needing dialysis and later kidney transplants.

The event coincided with the Ryder Cup and so teams were split into Europe and USA (with no profanities or insults from the public!) and stableford scoring . Scores combined at the end of the day resulted in Europe winning by a narrow 4 points.

Wollaton Park’s Lady Captain Jo Menzies and her ladies section generously offered us refreshments of Pimms, elderflower presse and cakes at the half way house whilst the admin, F&B team and Pro shop offered a seamless service to provide all in all an excellent day.
Thanks go to the Black Country Construction Ltd as our main Sponsor
It was great to meet Andrew Lunn head of Paediatric nephrology who offered some insight into their charity and the service offered by the team and we were proud to donate £2,500 to the charity during the year they celebrate 40 years of service.

Wollaton Park never disappoints, and the course was excellent with the deer population ever present.
We would like to thank them for their hospitality with the next Mulligans event moving to the Southeast as we venture to East Herts GC in June 2026.

The Mulligans’ golf day Newcastle under Lyme GC June 26th
The Mulligans recently held their 3rd event to date at Newcastle under Lyme Golf Club, supporting the University of North Midlands hospital charity (UHNM) and raising money for a ‘Spleen Machine’ to be used by the Liver Unit. The machine helps to detect engorged blood vessels in the spleen and is a tool to help in the management of Liver Disease.

30 Transplants and organ donors including a father whose toddler son has received a liver transplant and a young boy who has had a new kidney, played alongside 52 others.
The golf club provided a seamless service from its admin team to catering, bar staff, pro-shop and greenkeepers. Plenty of amazing feedback on the condition of the course and as for the greens? Lightning fast.
Our transplantees included Ana aged 30, a double lung transplantee who took up golf after her surgery and Mark aged 42, having received a heart and a kidney. We welcomed a large constituent of Scots to our melee and look forward to a possible future event up in the Highlands.
We were very happy to welcome Geoff Gardner’s widow, Heather who presented the Geoff Gardner trophy, designed in his memory as the first Mulligan member to be taken from us. It was won by the fourball team of lads from Dudley GC, pictured below with Heather and Mulligans GS organiser Mandy on the far right.

The event was filmed by the UHNM Charity and we promoted organ donation awareness to encourage people to actively sign up to the Organ Donor Register, to remind them of telling their families that they have done just that. As one of our Mulligans said,
“I lost my beautiful daughter a year and a half ago, to a brain haemorrhage and we knew exactly what to say when approached about donation her organs to save others. It was a resounding ‘YES’ as my daughter had told us that she was on the organ donor register. Her decision made our decision that much easier, she saved 10 people’s lives, and we are proud of her.”

2024’s golf days in review.
The Mulligans head to The Belfry

October 17th, we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day where 76 players from all over the UK converged to The Belfry to play the PGA National course. 24 of them were transplant beneficiaries or organ donors. The Mulligans Golf Society remit has always been to raise money for transplant orientated charities and this time we raised funds for Action Pulmonary Fibrosis. www.Actionpf.org.
We also spread the word about the importance of having the conversation as to your allowing your organs to be re-used. 1500 transplants failed to happen in 2023 simply because family members did not know the decision of their loved one. Family consent is still needed for organ donation.
Our day could not have gone ahead without the sponsorship of CDT Industrial Fencing and Arctic Cabins and the generosity of Midlands Golfer magazine owner Ian Nicholson who supplied the prizes through his Midlands Golf retail shops.
Luke Street, Chris Rippon and James Cockerill from The Belfry golf team went to all efforts to ensure our day was seamlessly run with James himself being a Stem Cell transplantee.
Sadly, the previous days’ weather being as it was, no buggies were allowed and it was tough for a lot of the Mulligans including one who has yet to have his lung transplant, but he was in a team with lung transplant expert Dr Amit Adlahka, so I felt at ease.
Lynne Holt from the British Transplant Games and an ambassador for transplantation was with us and Becki Portwood, Head Caterer from Penn GC was a star once again with her now famous logoed cupcakes.
Beat the Pro challenge was with Victoria Mallett and Ryan Brooks, a big thankyou to them both.
Our Longest drive came in the shape of a Hickory Club and all players enjoyed the challenge.
Thanks also to Jim White from Golf Genius for his amazing support with doing the cards and well done to Kevin Hale for the Trackman longest drive on the 10th hole, incidentally my son Louis came second
Pictured are the winners – ‘Bogey Monsters’ Jaffar and Jeff Shamsuddin, Tom Morley

2nd prize went to our sponsors team ‘The Hopefuls’ with Steve Cooper, Leo Forrester, and Gareth Mcaloon

‘Not a dry eye in sight’ – Great Barr plays host to the Mulligans GS debut

Thursday April 18th saw like-minded people gathering to play golf with the view to raising money for charity. They were partnered in fourballs to act as ambassadors for something very close to their hearts, (or livers, or lungs or kidneys or stem cells.) We had all had transplants and we also invited individuals who had donated organs through death or were living donors to be part of the Mulligans Golf Society. 19 of us were there on the day and we were able to spread the word about organ donation.
We were also interviewed by BBC West Mids radio and BBC online. It is a start to a crusade we feel passionately about.
The presentation and evening conclusion was topped by each of our Mulligans introducing themselves and explaining ‘the REASON WHY? The feedback from players was that they all found the day incredibly emotional.
Quoting Mike Burnside, ex Captain of Stone Golf Club. “The golf was good; the food was good but the message and impact on the day was hard hitting and certainly has made me think about having that conversation with those close to me. Great to be in the room with some bloody unbelievable human beings.”
Double lung transplantee Andy Bright was also celebrating his 60th birthday and a BIG thanks goes to Beckie Portwood, Head Caterer at Penn GC who generously made 100 Mulligans logoed cup-cakes and a birthday cake for Andy.

The day went smoothly with Great Barr GC being amazing. Many thanks to Ellie Potts, newly appointed to Sandwell Park GC for being our pro in the ‘Beat the Pro’ challenge.
Thanks to Josh Harvey the head PGA pro, Jan, Pascall and their team, a seamless service from start to finish. Not forgetting the ladies’ section with lady captain Julie, past captain Sylvia and Linda the vice-captain supporting us, with the incredible Jean, aged 92 sorting the cards. Their help was invaluable on the day. Linda is generously supporting the UHB charity (Transplants) as her designated charity for her year in 2025.
We welcomed golfer Dr Amit Adlahka, an Intensive Care consultant and lung transplant specialist to speak on behalf of organ donation and David Nix, Honorary President of the Family Donor Network.
Laura Power, deputy head of fundraising came from University Hospitals of Birmingham charity to talk about the new transplant unit being opened in October and to reinforce the importance of making your family aware of your intention to donate your organs after death.
I had the honour of introducing each of the Mulligans and learn about their stories. The feedback I received was one of enlightening and education.
We thank Coppertech for providing gloves with our logoed ball markers, and the Whitelodge Group, Lichfield for supplying our Mulligans logoed polo shirts.

The day successfully raised upwards of £2,500 with thanks to the many sponsors, Midlands Golfer Magazine, VIP fly, Huler, Complete Ventures, My Net Hub and The Croft nursery. Funds were raised further thanks to auction prize donations.
